Birgül Demirtaş is a professor of international relations at the Turkish-German University in İstanbul. She received her Ph.D. in Political Science from the Free University of Berlin; MA in International Relations from Bilkent University;  and BA in Political Science and International Relations from Boğaziçi University. Her studies concentrate on Turkish foreign policy, the Balkans, German foreign policy, Turkish political parties and migration and city diplomacy. She serves as the managing editor of the academic peer-review Journal of Uluslararası İlişkiler (International Relations). She has articles published in the Journal of Balkan and Near Eastern Studies, Middle East Policy, Iran and the Caucasus, Internationale Politik, WeltTrends, Perceptions, Ankara Journal of European Studies, and the Turkish Yearbook of International Relations.
