J. Humberto Lopez World Bank Country Director for the Republic of Türkiye

Mr. Humberto López is the World Bank Country Director for the Republic of Türkiye. He previously served as Director of Strategy and Operations for Eastern and Southern Africa, supporting the Vice President in shaping and implementing strategies across 26 countries, overseeing a portfolio of more than 350 projects valued at over $60 billion.

Before that, he was Director of Strategy and Operations for Latin America and the Caribbean, and served as Acting Vice President for the region from September 2019 to June 2020. He has also been Country Director for Central America and Director of the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Department for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Mr. López has published widely on fiscal policy, exchange rates, and economic growth, and is the editor of three books on free trade, migration and remittances, and investment climate and growth. He was the lead author of the World Bank’s 2006 Latin America flagship report on growth and poverty reduction.

Prior to joining the World Bank, he was a professor of economics at the University of Salamanca, Spain, and a visiting professor at Louisiana State University. He holds a PhD in Economics from the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.
