Şükrü Hanioğlu is Garrett Professor in Foreign Affairs in the Department of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University. He specialises in Ottoman political, diplomatic and intellectual history. His books include The Young Turks in Opposition (Oxford, 1995); Preparation for a Revolution: The Young Turks 1902-1908 (Oxford, 2001); A Brief History of the Late Ottoman Empire (Princeton, 2008); and Atatürk: an Intellectual Biography (Princeton, 2011).
